How fun to look through the many great proposals and get a glimpse at what my librarian colleagues around the country/world are doing! I am honored to be part of the DLS Conference Program Advisory Board and can't wait for the conference in Denver, April 23-25, 2014. <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

It was great having specific readings and assignments to help me target those topics for a few weeks. The class was broken out into three areas:
1) Pairing Active Learning with ACRL Standards & Learning Outcomes
2) Assessment & Using Assessment to Create Changes in Your Teaching
3) Learning & Teaching Styles.
I used the opportunity to reflect on activity under consideration for our First Year Seminar course. It was helpful to have to think through the lesson plan step-by-step and consider potential risks along with the assessment aspect. I'm definitely walking away with something I can use and build on.Pamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14009299285311892730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8888720924829898615.post-20043716208512588502013-04-30T08:36:00.001-05:002013-04-30T08:36:16.846-05:00ARLD Day 2013 -- April 26, 2013The 2013 ARLD theme was Changing Collections: Advocating for Our Future. The keynote speaker, Jenica Rogers, Director of Libraries at the State University of New York at Potsdam, spoke directly to that topic. Her experience with ACS was the platform for the discussion, but not the point of it. The economics of collection building need to change was a thrust of her talk, as well as the idea that as librarians we need to participate and be active with our industry partners (i.e., publishers, vendors) to alter the models to fit our needs and realities. She kept coming back to the idea that as librarians we need to think about what we want to do as professionals and why we do what we do.

The first breakout session I attended was lead by John T. Butler, Associate University Librarian for Data & Technology at the University of Minnesota. He was introducing the Digital Public Library of America, and specifically Minnesota's Digital Library as part of that work. He described this venture as an "unprecedented aggregation of free content" and reiterated the DPGA is a metadata repository, not a content repository. It's designed to be a reflection of what is in libraries across the country, and is all about accessibility to content vs. housing it. Definitely want to keep an eye on this: dp.la

Flipping the Classroom: Checking for Flops, lead by librarians from Macalester College, rounded out the morning sessions. They talked through their use of Google apps, part of their assessment plan, and a citation tracking assignment they used in library instruction. I liked that they established "success criteria" as targets for assessing some specific information literacy skills (e.g., 90% of student groups completing an in-class activity during FYS will be satisfactory or better on a rubric). They also talked about another assessment tool (Research Practices Survey) they give to their students; I believe it was usually on a 3-year rotation.

Session three was focused on using the tools in Google Drive. I have been using aspects of Google Drive for a number of years as a collaboration tool with colleagues, but this presentation talked about how to use it with students. I learned that some colleges/universities in MN are "Google App" schools meaning they use the Google Drive suite of tools instead of Microsoft Office, so students all have a Google account and are familiar with the tools. I liked the idea of using it for a research consultation. The example was if someone asked for assistance on a certain topic, the librarian could do some research ahead of time and put some search terms, results, etc. in a spreadsheet and use that as a teaching tool during the research consultation. It was also allow the students the opportunity to "take" that spreadsheet and add to it. They also talked about using the Google Form option instead of SurveyMonkey.

The final session of the day was the "Lighting Round" where six different topics were presented in short segments: Adding VideoGames to your Library? - videogamecat.com ; Leveraging Library Resources: Accessibility in Your Online Learning Management System - idea of creating a more-focused Library widget to offer faculty to use in D2L ; Highlighting Undergraduate Work Online - UofM, Morris, is starting an undergraduate online journal to highlight student work (BePress Digital Commons is what they are using for the institutional repository) love this idea! ; Into the Bright Sunshine of Human Rights: Accessing the Legacy of Hubert H. Humphrey Through Digitization - talked through the process used to digitize text files of HHH ; Reference Collections: Do Libraries Need Them? - UofM, Duluth needed to create space so worked through a process to evaluate their Reference Collection and ultimately reduced their Reference Collection by 57%; Personal Archiving - they mentioned that the Library of Congress has a good starting site for exploring personal archiving.

The Imagine, Innovate, Inspire focus of this national
conference hits the nail on the head! I came away invigorated with new ideas and
affirmation for some initiatives I'm working on. All of the sessions I attended were in either
the Assessment or Teaching & Learning track. Thursday
began with “The one-Shot Mixtape: Lessons for Planning, Delivering, and
Integrating Instruction.” This
presentation was based on the article “Notes from the Field: 10 Short Lessons
on One-Shot Instruction” in Communications
in Information Literacy 6(1). This session confirmed that information
literacy is a campus issue, not a library issue; something we are in the heart
of at SMSU. This article is a must-read.

“Making IL Relevant: Creating Engaging IL Experiences for Students”
was a well-done presentation that focused on the collaboration between
librarians and a Public Health faculty member. The faculty member kicked off
the presentation, and together the panel (which included 2 librarians, the
faculty member, and a student) walked through the library sessions, their
purpose, and the assessment measures used. This started as a grant that incentivized
the faculty to collaborate with the library on an information literacy initiative.
Something we could try using Endowed Funds?

Three contributed papers made up the next session: “Melding
the Nitty Gritty of Critical Thinking and Information Literacy into English
Developmental and Composition Classes,” “Information Literacy as a Formative Force,”
and “The
Almost Experts: Capstone Students and the Research Process.” I took away a nugget from each 20-minute
presentation!

“Inspiring Our Newest Students: The Role of the Library in the First
Year Experience” rounded out day 1 of the conference. Many ideas were
shared by the presenters, as well as via the audience. Some ideas we already
have in place (such as the ever-popular fortune cookies), but many more we
could explore. Lack of staffing is our biggest hurdle to implementing some of
the great ideas shared at this session. Reference to the University of
Minnesota study about the impact of library use on GPA and retention was made
throughout the presentation.

While assessment was discussed in some of the sessions I
attended on Thursday, Friday morning brought me to my first assessment-focused
session: “Creating a Culture of Assessment: Determinants of Success.” Not that we need another committee, but the
idea of having an “Information Literacy Council” with representatives from
around the campus appealed to me. As noted earlier, IL isn’t a Library-focused
topic, but rather a college one, and more stakeholders should be intimately involved
in the discussion about how to incorporate, assess, etc., IL competencies
throughout the curriculum.

The three tools highlighted in “Methods Behind the Instructional
Madness: Assessing and Enhancing Learning Through Portfolios, Mapping, and
Rubrics” provided options for librarians conducting assessment. This
presentation fostered many great ideas for better utilization of our IL rubric!
I will definitely spend some time
reviewing this presentation.

Due to the tremendous number and variety of sessions, I only
attended one roundtable at the conference and it was about “Teaching Summon: The Impact of
Discovery Services on Library Instruction.” The moderator provided a
selected bibliography to refer back to, and the discussion was a lively one
with some at the table already using a discovery tool while others saw it on
the horizon. One of the positives shared
by the moderator was that not having to teach the individual mechanics of each
database allowed for the librarian to talk about the content of results
relatively quickly (i.e., source evaluation, scholarly vs. popular, etc.). There seemed to be consensus at the table
that upper division students continued to need targeted instruction on
subject-specific databases, and that a discovery tool wouldn’t always suffice
for discipline research.

The second set of contributed papers I attended was “How is This Different From Critical
Thinking?: The Risks and Rewards of Deepening Faculty Involvement in an Information
Literacy Rubric,” Becoming an Assessment Leader: Collaborating for Campus Wide
Information Literacy Assessment,” and “Just-in-Time Instruction, Regular
Reflection, and Integrated Assessment: A Sustainable Model for Student Growth.”
Each group spoke for 20 minutes, and provided lots of “food for thought” as we continue
to tackle a campus-wide IL initiative.

Poster sessions
were interspersed throughout Thursday and Friday. The depth and breadth of the
poster sessions was truly amazing. There is so much research being done in
libraries throughout the country; it is inspiring. I have many handouts and links I need to go
back and explore!

“The Flipped Classroom in the Library: Integrating Formal and Informal
Learning Spaces” kicked off my Saturday morning. Much talk about the
need for the Library to be a partner and collaborate with other entities on
campus was interspersed throughout the presentation. The focus was on space
utilization more so than library instruction, but the endeavor brought an active
learning space into the libraries at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Apparently I saved the best for last, as the final session I
attended was my favorite: “Building an Instruction Arsenal: Using
Standardized Elements to Streamline Class Planning and Ease Student Learning
Assessment Across the Curriculum.” This one hit home as it aligns with
what we are working to implement with our library instruction sessions. Their
work in scaffolding and establishing student learning outcomes parallels our intentions
here. Whew! Nice to hear about their
success and see we’re on a good track!

The conference ended with Keynote Speaker Maria Hinojosa who was inspiring through her
passion, her stories, and her work. She has a great message about humanity and reminded
us to “see each other.”

Next ACRL Conference is scheduled for March 25-28, 2015, in Portland,
Oregon...hope to be there!

He walked through the basics of copyright, provided examples of application, and answered questions from the audience. Flowcharts and checklists were provided to help serve as guides when copyright questions arise.

Led by Perry Madden and Al Rykhus from PALS, session two was a demonstration and open discussion about MnPALS Plus Version 2. This will be the live version of MnPALS plus this summer. Some adjustments need to be made yet, but it is functioning and ready for use.

The first afternoon session I attended was a Web Scale Discovery presentation by Jennifer DeJonghe and Michelle Filkins from Metro State. They highlighted how their internal usability testing lead to the decision to pursue a discovery tool. They are new to implementation, but anticipate being able to alter BI sessions by having more time to focus on "higher level" skills such as search refinement, content and sources (e.g., scholarly vs. popular), source evaluation, choosing keywords, etc. Their presentation also focused on the idea of serendipity being useful for students as they search. in the discovery tool where "all" disciplines are being searched at once, students will encounter connections for their topic they might not have considered. They anticipate no longer teaching the catalog as a stand-alone tool, but teaching primarily the Discovery tool. Emphasis will be on critical thinking and evaluation. They anticipate using Subject Guides for more advanced classes where students need to be directed to specific databases.

A panel discussion about Online Library Instruction rounded out the day. Ideas such as using a webinar tool like Adobe Connect was introduced, along with a variety of ways librarians have embedded themselves into courses. Embedding video clips into online classes, updating subject guides and emailing them directly to faculty to have them link in their courses, and going the extra mile to ensure distance students had their login information were discussed. Getting involved in a new faculty session was described as a great way to let new faculty know about library services. Learning objects from PRIMO and MERLOT were also demonstrated.
They've posted their individual summaries online at http://tinyurl.com/dlspanel Ultimately the discussion lead to the summary that the distinction between roles really depends on the college and library setup as well as librarian personality and levels of comfort. The Distance Librarians definitely serve as the primary advocate for distance library services, but might not be the only provider of those services. The session ended with comments from the audience that supplemented the presentation. We are all in similar boats!
Pamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14009299285311892730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8888720924829898615.post-41637306180540104042012-04-25T15:01:00.001-05:002012-04-25T15:01:27.597-05:00Using Systematic Design to Create Affective Library Instruction for Distance learning Students: A Model Baserrd on Kuhlthau's Information Serach Process (ISP) - April 20, 2012Having Kulhthau's name in the title of this presentation caught my eye and brought me back to my days as a K-8 Librarian when I worked to incorporate her process into my library instruction classes. One of the first questions the presenter (Angela Doucet Rand @ University of South Alabama - Baldwin County) asked was if our goal is to teach students to be librarians? She was being a bit facetious, but sometimes we wonder how much of our area of expertise we expect students to know after a session or two of library instruction. The thrust of her presentation was focused on cognitive science and how students need to be motivated to learn. She believes we've focused too much on the search process itself and haven't helped students to think about how they learn and feel about their research experience. She wants to move to a more learner-centric model. While this was a very academic presentation (she's a doctoral candidate) that was more theoretical than practical, it certainly offered librarians the chance to think about what our students may be going through as they encounter the research process.Pamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14009299285311892730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8888720924829898615.post-46947291867928388212012-04-25T14:51:00.000-05:002012-04-25T14:51:09.443-05:00SpringShare CampusGuides/LibGuidesOne aspect of this conference I have always appreciated is that there isn't an emphasis on vendors. This is the first time I recall having vendors on site...and it was presented more as a Technology Showcase than a time to sell a product. I did stop into the Springshare presentation - this is the company that does LibGuides and many of the sessions I had attended referred to their use of LibGuides in reaching distance students. The presentation focused more on the CampusGuides portion that ties into LibGuides. I need to learn more about this tool and how it differentiates from LibData that we currently use.
Intelecom was also presenting; we currently have a trial for that video clip set. I did visit with that representative on Friday morning during the Poster presentation time.Pamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14009299285311892730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8888720924829898615.post-60975409911332862572012-04-25T14:11:00.001-05:002012-04-25T14:11:14.739-05:00Table for One: How Librarians Provide Individualized Services to Distance Students via Web Conferencing - April 19, 2012Using web conferencing (in our case Adobe Connect) for reference or instruction sessions has been a service I'd like to start offering, so I was interested in hearing how the librarians on this panel approached it. Librarians from Indiana State University, University of Central Missouri, Norwich University, University of West Georgia, University of Maryland, and Saint Leo University presented how they utilized this at their respective colleges. While each approach was a bit different based on population needs and staffing availability, one similarity was the need to continually remind students (and faculty) that the service is available; ongoing marketing is needed. (Ultimately this is true for most of our library services.) It got me thinking about how we could set this up at Minnesota West....should it be set hours or by appointment only? Should specific kiosks be established at each campus? How would we advertise on the website? Could we be scheduling times for this via GradesFirst? One could argue, as the presenters did, that graduate and doctoral students have differing needs than their undergraduate counterparts. These librarians from Benedictine University have a very hands-on, personalized approach to serving their distance learners. They do many one-on-one consultations with students and offer many ways to be in contact with a librarian after the consultation; almost as a personal research assistant. This model doesn't match my situation, but their point that we need to stop being passive and actively be an involved service point works in all distance library scenarios.
Pamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14009299285311892730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8888720924829898615.post-55421051646394966672012-04-25T13:53:00.003-05:002012-04-25T13:53:41.430-05:00Dr. Trey Martindale - Keynote Speaker - April 19, 2012Dr. Trey Martindale is an instructional designer, and the Director of the IDT Studio at the University of Memphis. She is from New Zealand and works at Massey University - a 4-campus institution with 52% online classes. Rings a bell... Her presentation took a bit of a different approach to embedded librarianship than other sessions I attended; I appreciated her point-of-view. Her premise is that library skills is a small part of many courses, primarily due to the amount of content instructors need to cover. While faculty might appreciate a long information literacy section within their course, they can't afford the time. Heather's question to the audience was to think about if it really made sense to fully embed in online courses; she says no, it is more productive to take an integrated approach. Massey's approach is to create a suite of online resources that are pretty generic and then customize/add to if needed for specific courses/assignment. While these Captivate tutorials do need to be kept up-to-date, they aren't needing to create a new one for each class and much content can be reused. Again the need to place the library information at the point-of-need for the students was highlighted; location/timing matters. She believes students need to learn the skills, and if librarians "hold their hand" each time they need to use the library, we aren't being good teachers. She takes more of a 'tough love' approach where students are redirected back to the content in their online course if they haven't already gone over it. She indicated that with this general content in so many online courses, the basics are learned/known by the students, so they can focus on more advanced searches in higher level courses.Pamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14009299285311892730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8888720924829898615.post-37885111217043893552012-04-25T13:20:00.000-05:002012-04-25T13:20:00.857-05:00Create a Sense of Place for the Mobile Learner - April 19, 2012Taken from the session description: "“Sense of place” no longer applies only to the physical library. It’s time to start thinking of all your students as distance learners to one extent or another, and of all your distance services as a single virtual learning commons. Implement and integrate current teaching, learning, virtual reference, and mobile access technologies at reasonable cost and create online learning spaces that bring your students to the library no matter where they are." This team from Bucks County Community College did a great job of discussing 'sense of place.' They highlighted how they have approached serving all learners at their college. I love their process of sequencing Information Literacy skills into the Composition classes...a little at a time. Setting this up requires major buy-in from the faculty member, but it would seem to fit the students' needs the best. They also require faculty to submit the assignment students will be doing that requires library resources prior to scheduling a library teaching session; it isn't optional. (This reminds me of a MnSCU presentation I went to last year where the speaker said, "Students don't do optional.") They did get into some specific tools they've utilized to make their website (which is the focus of their efforts to bring everything together for the students, regardless of their location) easily accessible. They use LibGuides, video clips, xtranormal (animation tool, but now there's cost to that), and Boopsie as their backend tool.Pamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14009299285311892730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8888720924829898615.post-17951946823338686682012-04-25T12:57:00.001-05:002012-04-25T12:57:48.855-05:00In the Trenches: Librarians Embedding in the Online Classroom - April 19, 2012This was a panel session with librarians from Northern Virginia Community College, Limestone College, Southern New Hampshire University, and Indiana State University. The panel discussed differing levels of embedding along with the difficulty of being both an online and on-campus librarian. One idea that I've been considering advertising is in place (I can't recall which librarian discussed this!) and that is the use of live instruction via a webinar setting and then doing follow-up in a discussion forum. This was mentioned several times in this session and in others I attended: the course faculty drive the level of involvement and it's important to meet with them individually and learn each others' expectation. A general Research/Writing module has been put into one college's CMS and all students can access it. This doesn't include a discussion forum, but a librarian photo and contact information is provided so students have someone identified to reach out to.
Pamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14009299285311892730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8888720924829898615.post-82663609808152857092012-04-25T12:21:00.000-05:002012-04-25T12:21:09.242-05:00From Add-on to Mainstream: Applying Distance Learning Models for ALL Students - April 18, 2012Due to our high online enrollment at Minnesota West CTC, this title caught my attention. Why do we differentiate between our online, on-campus, hybrid learners? One of the initial comments by the presenters from Northern Kentucky University struck a chord with me; they dislike the one-shot bibliographic sessions. Me, too!! Although we can say we met with students and introduced them to the library or library resources, it's an ineffective method to really get students thinking about using the library and how to best use the library resources. It's like having one driver's ed session and then handing over the car keys. Young people have been in a car their whole lives and (sort of) know how driving a car works...just like the libraries they've likely visited in their lives. Truly utilizing the library for academic work is a much different situation that requires a more advanced set of skills! Okay, off my soapbox and back to the presentation... NKU focuses on embedding library instruction into online environments as much as possible. This allows students to access it at point-of-need vs. having to rely on retaining what was covered in a 1-shot session. The librarians stay embedded in the course all semester and monitor forums, drop in new lessons as needed, and just try to be present for students. They indicated they are pretty close to eliminating face-to-face library instruction, and are not staffing the reference desk as many hours as they have an online question submission form and also are meeting students in the online course forums to answer questions there. I like this model!Pamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14009299285311892730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8888720924829898615.post-56784116026535413022012-04-25T11:53:00.000-05:002012-04-25T11:53:06.198-05:00Moving from Introverted to Extroverted Embedded Librarian Services - April 18, 2012Wayne State (NE) College librarians moved from a hap-hazard embedded librarianship approach to a more systematic way of working with students in online classes. One major emphasis for their approach was to find the "right time" to introduce library skills, resources, etc. to the student. They would work with the faculty members to see what and when assignments were due and work to target to those. This first sessions was a good reinforcer of work I'm already doing :)Pamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14009299285311892730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8888720924829898615.post-37349003903968706862012-04-25T11:34:00.000-05:002012-04-25T11:34:24.693-05:0015th Distance Library Services Conference - April 18-20, 2012 - Memphis, TNThis was my third time attending the Distance Library Services Conference (formerly known as the Off-Campus Library Services Conference), and it once again was a well-planned, well-put together, informative conference. The narrow focus of this conference makes it so useful to the work of Distance Librarians; plus it's always great to commiserate with people who encounter similar difficulties and joys!
Memphis was a great host city and the Peabody was an extraordinary venue for the conference (only downside was not having free wireless access available in each presentation room). On Tuesday night, I had the opportunity to dine with 17 librarians from around the country at Charles Vergos' Rendezvous; a true dry-rub BBQ restaurant! With the Memphis Redbirds (St. Louis' Triple A affiliate) playing just across the street from the Peabody, a handful of us took in a baseball game Wednesday night. Ours was the "Lucky Row" for the night so we got our mugs on the big screen and we each took home a plastic baseball bat and wiffle ball...well, those of us who drove or brought a really large suitcase brought it home! (Only my wiffle ball made it!) Thursday night I took a self-guided tour around the area, visiting Beale street, and ending up at Huey's (a local hamburger joint).
Each session I attended offered me oppportunities to learn something new, hear new perspectives, and meet wonderful librarians .Pamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14009299285311892730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8888720924829898615.post-86178049308615580782012-04-13T14:16:00.002-05:002012-04-13T14:34:36.415-05:00MnPALS Annual Meeting - April 12, 2012The Annual meeting had a full agenda with emphasis given to three primary topics:
1. Now the trick is to find the time to try them out! A presentation about the ERM made me want to look into this tool again. As our purchases of electronic resources continues to rise, our need for an electronic management tool will as well! As another librarian in the group mentioned, not having an efficient way to track electronic resources can hold one back from purchasing them; we can't afford to do that.
Enjoyed reconnecting with colleagues and meeting new librarians from around the state!Pamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14009299285311892730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8888720924829898615.post-12815269956137850342012-02-27T10:43:00.004-06:002012-02-27T11:16:20.590-06:00Luoma Leadership Annual Gathering - February 23-24, 2012I attended this conference both as a graduate of the Luoma Leadership Academy (4th cohort; 2007-08) and as a mentor to a current Leadership Academy participant (Linda Pesch). It was fun to reconnect with colleagues from my cohort as well as other attendees.
Hearing directly from Chancellor Steven Rosenstone was a great way to kick-off this gathering. His talk was entitled "Collaborative Leadership" centered around the Strategic Framework for Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. He referenced a book called "It's Your Ship: Management Techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy" and also made another ship-related analogy when he referred to the system as a fleet indicating we need to be working as a team vs. protecting our own turf. He also talked about the importance of creating a culture where we all work together to be more successful. I was happy to hear he is focused on bridging with K12 to work towards college readiness for students.
After the Chancellor spoke, we broke into "Open Space Conversations on Building Partnerships." The conversation I attended focused on ABE and college-readiness in general.
BREAKOUT I: Expanding Opportunites for Students: Academic Program Partnerships Across the System -- one of the programs highlighted (Child Development) is one that our MnWest faculty takes part in! The other is a new venture between Mesabi Range Community & Technical College and Inver Hills Community College and Construction Management offerings. The focus was on how important it is to reach out to other colleges and see what partnerships can be made to help offer courses/programs to students.
BREAKOUT II: Leveraging Shared Services to Increase Efficiency and Effectiveness -- this was the first I'd heard of the "Campus Service Cooperative" and how some colleges are making arrangements with others to do select business office functions with the emphasis on best practices. I was reminded how our college is moving towards a One-Stop shop for student services; this is a similar model for business services across the system.Pamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14009299285311892730noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8888720924829898615.post-56919683345327106992012-02-27T10:35:00.003-06:002012-02-27T10:43:46.009-06:00All-College Teaching & Learning Day - February 21, 2012I always look forward to our all-college days as it is a great time to reconnect with faculty from across the college. This time we were on the Canby campus!
Ensuring Access to an Extraordinary Education for All Minnesotans -- led by President Shrubb and Provost Williamson, we had an open discussion about this first part of the system strategic framework. It was a good and worthwhile discussion.
I Know How You Loaded that Video Last Summer: The Not-So-Scary Use of Electronic Resources -- a presentation given by Judy Tebben and me about different technology (specifically Adobe Connect) and resources (streaming videos, eBooks, electronic articles) that can be used to supplement courses.
Developmental Educational Strategies -- I was part of the panel that presented on the Developmental Education & Student Success Conference we attended the prior week. Sessions I attended were:
The Scaling of MCTC's First Year Experience Program -- they are using a variety of tools in their course including StrengthsFinder (I was first introduced to this tool in the LUOMA Leadership Academy; it is eye-opening and helpful to know one's strengths), GPS LifePlan, eFolio, along with the book called Step-by-Step by Gardner. It's a 2-credit course at MCTC and all instructors use the same syllabus and textbook for a level of commonality. Forty-five sections were offered this Fall.
Riverland Community College Readiness Program - Pulling the Puzzle Pieces Together introduced me to the Accuplacer Diagnostics and MyFoundation Lab tool...something our group discussed in our wrap-up meetings. There was also good discussion about using the term College Readiness instead of Development Education and the importance of Institutional Culture and it's impact on the success of the program.
Tutors Linked to Classes (TLC) at Century College -- an in-depth Supplemental Instruction program that has had high success. This is also being explored by our college as a support service for our students.
Expanding Academic Support Services - general discussion about tutoring options at North Hennepin Community College.
Center for College Readiness -- I've listened to part of this presentation before (the College ready writing portion) and am fascinated by this work. This is a really a bridge program with high schools (and part of it now goes down to the Junior High level) to help students see what it takes to be ready for college.
Wrap-up was a discussion among similar college types; not necessarily for action, but we learned we have similar issues.
Action items for our college included:
1) Summer Bridge Math
2) Summer Freshman Seminar (and subsequent elimination of current Summer Fast Track program)
3) Tutors in classes
4) GradesFirst - expanding into other tools within the softwarePamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14009299285311892730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8888720924829898615.post-72648640925573245152011-10-24T15:01:00.002-05:002011-10-24T15:11:15.413-05:00Online Teaching, Streaming Multimedia, Copyright and All That Jazz - October 19, 2011Along with 249 other registrants, I listened to and viewed a presentation by David M. Hooten, Music Instructor at McLennan Community College in Waco, TX, speak about his use of Softchalk to create his online music appreciation course. He demonstrated for the group how he incorporated images, streaming audio, streaming video and links to articles into his course. It was so encouraging to see how many library resources he utilized!! His use of Encyclopedia Brittanica (a tool we have FREE access to in Minnesota thanks to ELM) and other library databases (specifically Naxos Music Library) was refreshing! He also mentioned free tools such a YouTube and NPR as resources. He commented on how difficult it can be to find operas to include in the course as while much of the music is in the public domain, the performances are not.
He referenced three tools he has utilized to edit materials to incorporate into his course: Snag-It to add captions to images, Sound Forge for MP3 files, and Camtasia for streaming video. He noted that it is important to keep video segments short - both for the end-user and for the streaming video server. He specifically mentioned how vital library resources are for online courses!Pamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14009299285311892730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8888720924829898615.post-90340185234641826702011-04-27T11:10:00.005-05:002011-10-24T15:16:41.862-05:00Copyright & Intellectual Property Webinar - 4/25/11Listened in on an informative webinar with MnScu's System Director for Intellectural Property, Gary Hunter. His presentation reinforced many of the practices I have supported at Minnesota West such as the need to see if streaming rights are available for purchase before converting a DVD into streaming format. Also the discussion about being conscious of the fact that many "consumables" (e.g., workbooks, tests, quizzes) oppose fair use guidelines.
The discussion about e-Textbooks and course packs was interesting, too. The recommendation is to always cite where information is from and to include documentation about copyright clearance from each copyright holder in the coursepack so it is clear that all is in compliance. I do wonder how much we are moving away from printed coursepacks and as we transition into providing readings via the digital D2L environment how much this is/will be monitored?
Other topics of interest that were discussed included public performance rights (always necessary for entertainment purposes) and concern over using Google Images (suggestion is to assume they are copyrighted).
In the discussion about streaming video, reference to a document entitled Educational Video Streaming: A Short Primer by Arnold P. I participated in the Opening session topic discussing how we serve our online and distance students. There were also presenters from Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU), Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSUM), and Northland Community College. I think an entire day could have been spent on this topic!
The first breakout session I attended was Circulation Reports and How We Use Them - this was a good refresher of available reports and it was nice to hear how other libraries use the data. Breakout #2 was about How Lost Items are Handled in Circulation. As a result of this session, I will be requesting some table changes in order to clean-up our lost items replacement fees in circulation. This session also reminded me to look at Patron Scrubbing practices. The final Breakout of the day was Keeping your Circulation Tables up to Date - again this was a good refresher about which tables need to be updated and when to make those changes. I've already been able to make a few changes in the tables with information I learned at the workday!Pamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14009299285311892730noreply@blogger.com0
